Sometimes needs must, and perhaps it’s just me as I get older, but Tuesday night’s Northern Ireland v Iceland friendly game at Windsor Park has to go down as one of the worst international matches I have watched in a long time. Maybe we’ve been spoiled of late with our new young guns’ top-drawer performances, but without doubt there is something about June friendlies when players are asked to play international games hot on the heels of a long, hard season.

There will be smiles as wide as the Irish Sea from a few mighty proud Dunlops as they look down on us from above after Michael proved he is unquestionably the greatest motorcycle roadracing Champion on the planet. I’ve always said that the Isle of Man TT races represent the biggest test of man/woman and machine in motorcycle roadracing, and in Michael Dunlop we currently have the best solo roadracer in the world. This week’s results on the island merely confirm that.

It’s that time again when my ears tend to overheat as I announce my Team of the Year, because I’m quite sure many of you will differ from me in your own choices — but that’s what makes our sport open to debate and varying opinion.
