A new Pope has been elected, as white smoke emerging from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel signalled that the cardinals had finally reached a decision. 133 cardinals had regrouped at the chapel on Thursday, May 8 to resume the voting process for the 267th Pope, after a first conclave ballot had not been successful, resulting in black smoke being sent up the chimney. They had failed to secure a majority of two-thirds, or 89 ballots.
