GENEVA — When I was studying medicine back in the mid-1990s, one of my tutors told me and my fellow students that the intestines, or guts if you prefer, are a window to the soul. What he meant was that they tell us much about the state of a person in both body and mind. But what he couldn’t have known at the time was the fundamental role that the gut microbiota, or the naturally occurring community of bacteria and other microbes in the intestines, plays in human health.
