After a duller than average winter for the UK, the weather seems to have got the memo about spring. According to the Met Office, not only have some areas had their sunniest March on record, but it has also been very dry – especially for southern parts of England. It was also warmer than usual for the UK, with the mean temperature 1.3C above average – although this anomaly nowhere near as significant as it has been for sunshine and dryness.

Storm Éowyn is set to hit the UK on Friday, bringing damaging and disruptive winds, along with heavy rain and hill snow in the north. For some parts of the UK, it will not only be the most powerful storm so far this winter, but the strongest storm in years. Ahead of the storm’s arrival, people are being advised not to travel, with transport services suspended and schools closed.

For many of us, the first half of January has been characterised by predominantly cold weather, with some places seeing snow. Altnaharra in the Scottish Highlands saw the temperature drop to -18.9C, making it the UK’s coldest January night since 2010. Daytime temperatures have widely struggled to get much above freezing, and the cold feel has often been exacerbated by cloudy skies – depriving us of the ever so slightly moderating effect of the weak January sunshine.
