One of the best things about the 12-string guitar is that it works so similarly to a 6-string. Anything that was written for a 6-string can immediately have its sound upgraded with that extra octave, and likewise, anything written for a 12-string is easily played on a 6-string if you don’t have one lying around. Because of this, we often don’t tend to pay much attention to dedicated 12-string guitar riffs and songs, generally opting to just pretend they are 6-string guitar parts anyway.

Wolfgang Van Halen, son of Eddie Van Halen and the current leader of Mammoth WVH, singled out his all-time favorite guitar solo recorded by his dad. Wolfgang, who also played bass guitar in the final incarnation of the band, appeared in Chris Jericho’s show “Talk Is Jericho” recently where he was asked about what’s his favorite lead guitar part by Eddie. But an often underrated area of the guitar is the acoustic guitar solo, the very nature of an acoustic guitar with its higher action and increased difficulty when performing bends means it pulls the player away from speed and into thinking more about note choice.

The bass guitar can often be underappreciated, especially considering how much of an impact it has on a song. Helping out on the production side of things by providing that low-end rumble and giving a song its power, energy, and richness, to taking the lead with memorable grooves and riffs that become the defining part of a song, completely overshadowing the lead guitars. Needless to say, the bass deserves some recognition for everything it adds to our favorite songs.
