Twenty years ago in Moscow's Red Square, former US President George W Bush sat alongside Russian President Vladimir Putin to mark the 60th anniversary of the Soviet Union's defeat of Nazi Germany. The leaders of France, Germany and other European countries also attended Russia's Victory Day celebrations in 2005. Back then, it looked like the divisions of the Cold War had been plastered over.

A woman was killed yesterday evening in an axe attack on the campus of the University of Warsaw in the Polish capital. Local media reported that a 53-year-old woman was attacked by a 22-year-old male law student. The woman died immediately at the scene. The University of Warsaw has confirmed that she was a member of staff at the university.

It was not surprising that George Simion, the leader of the far-right Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), topped the first-round vote of Romania's rerun presidential election yesterday. The 38-year-old had been polling at around 30% for the past couple of weeks and last night, two exit polls reflected those predictions. But with almost all votes counted, he has performed much better than polls had indicated, winning 41% of votes.
