When Melanie Rivarola’s daughter was born in Lviv, a city in western Ukraine, she was sitting alone in a hospital room, without phone service, as an air raid alert sounded. She found out she had become a mother when a doctor came by to congratulate her. In another room on the same floor, Darya, a Ukrainian surrogate, had just given birth to her daughter. Rivarola, who is from Florida, met her husband, an Argentine, at an Ironman sports competition when she was 38.

Over the summer, Hungary’s nationalist leader Viktor Orban was busy meeting fellow strongmen. After jetting to Moscow to sit down with Vladimir Putin in a meeting condemned by other European leaders, he crossed the Atlantic to visit former President Donald Trump. In their July meeting at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida, the two men discussed peace between Russia and Ukraine. They posed in front of the cameras with broad grins and gestured with their thumbs up.

Fotografa Zsuzsanna Simon avea 26 de ani când, în 2014, a adoptat o poziție foarte curajoasă. Și-a scris pe burtă, cu ruj roz, „nu voi naște până nu se schimbă ceva în guvern”. Apoi și-a făcut două selfie-uri. Protestul ei a generat o serie de manifestări similare – Zsuzsanna a fotografiat alte femei care și-au decorat trupurile cu aceeași frază sau cu exprimări asemănătoare. Zece ani mai târziu, acțiunile lor au mai multă importanță decât oricând.

Në vitin 2014, kur ajo ishte 26-vjeçare, fotografja Zsuzsanna Simon e mori një vendim të guximshëm. Me një buzëkuq, ajo shkroi në barkun e saj: “Nuk do të lind fëmijë derisa të ndryshojë Qeveria”.
