The president, citing Ukrainian intelligence, said Moscow was mounting a new multi-pronged push in the Sumy, Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia regions. Oleksandr Syrskyi, Ukraine’s military chief, later confirmed that Mr Zelensky was “absolutely right” and that the offensive has “effectively already begun”.

Oleksandr Syrskyi, Ukraine's military chief, confirmed the offensive had "already begun", saying in an interview with the Ukrainian publication LB: "For several days, almost a week, we have been observing almost a doubling of the number of enemy attacks in all main directions [on the frontline]."A new Russian ground offensive would be further evidence that Moscow is looking to maximise pressure on Ukraine and strengthen the Kremlin's position in a potential US-brokered ceasefire.
