Students Find a Way to Engage in Election Through Poll Working

In the face of the historic presidential election between Vice President Kamala Harris and now President-elect Donald Trump, students found ways to become involved by serving as election judges via the College Student Judge Program. The program, operated by the Chicago Board of Election Commissioners, offers college students the opportunity to register to be an election judge, even if they aren’t a permanent resident of Cook County, by registering with the address of their dorm or apartment.
Insomnia Cookies Workers Strike, Cite Long Standing Safety Concerns

Former employees of the Rogers Park Insomnia Cookies location have gone on strike after allegedly being forced to remain open by corporate level management after a victim of a nearby shooting took refuge in the store Oct. 28. The shooting occurred near 1200 W. Arthur Ave., about 200 feet from the cookie store located at 6470 N. Sheridan Rd., The Phoenix reported.
Shooting Near Lake Shore Campus, Two Minor Injuries

An Oct. 28 shooting, which occurred at approximately 2 p.m. near 1200 W. Loyola Ave., left two victims in non-critical condition, according to the Chicago Police Department. It isn’t known as of Oct. 29 if any victims were Loyola students. The incident occurred approximately 0.2 miles from the Lake Shore Campus and about 400 feet from The Morgan at Loyola Station, an apartment building owned and operated by the university.

Students on the Sept. 8 Mertz Hall Intruder

It was after 9 p.m. Sept. 8 when first-year Elizabeth Nolan was returning to her dorm room on the 19th floor of Mertz Residence Hall from the Information Commons. As she entered the building, she noticed a man pacing restlessly near the entrance to the building. When he tried to follow her inside as she scanned her student ID, she “slammed the door in his face” and messaged her roommate Leah Cerulli to warn her of the potential danger.

Intruder Gains Access to Mertz Hall

A man unaffiliated with the university gained access to Mertz hall around 9:45 p.m. Sept. 8, where he verbally assaulted students and entered student’s rooms before fleeing the scene, according to a Sept. 9 email from the Student Division of Development. Campus Safety was notified of the incident, but the man had already left the building by the time they arrived, according to the Sept. 9 email.
DNC Protesters March to Oppose War in Gaza for Final Day of Convention

Pro-Palestinian protesters gathered downtown for the final day of the Democratic National Convention August 22 to call for the U.S. to end military support for Israel and its continuing attacks in Gaza. The event began at Union Park, on Chicago’s Near West Side, where organizers gave speeches to the crowd before the group began the half-mile march to the United Center.
First All-Girls Little League Baseball Team At Warren Park Starts This Fall

WEST RIDGE — Warren Park Youth Baseball is launching its first all-girls Little League team this fall, open to girls 8-10 years old. There will be two teams in the all-girls league fall, and games will take place Sunday evenings in Warren Park, 6601 N. Western Ave., and other local parks. Registration for the upcoming season has ended.
