The Ministry of Justice has released the data confirming the government's claim it met its target to reduce the number of violent crime victims by 20,000 by 2029. The government held a press conference on Wednesday afternoon without the data to back it up - until the Ministry released it later that night. But there are concerns around the reporting of the data, and Labour says the government has decided it has a "narrative on law and order", and it's "looking for data to fit that narrative".

Parliament has unanimously agreed to allow all submissions on the Treaty Principles Bill to be added to the public record, after a last-minute motion was moved by ACT MP Todd Stephenson. It comes after thousands of submissions were to be excluded from the record because staff did not have enough time to process them, raising concerns about cynicism when it comes to engaging with democracy. On Thursday afternoon, Stephenson sought leave to move a motion "without notice or debate".

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon says New Zealand is "relatively well positioned" to weather Donald Trump's new sweeping global tariffs, because it's been hit with the "baseline tariff" by the US whereas other countries had received "much higher". Speaking to reporters this afternoon, Luxon said he doesn't believe "tariffs and trade wars" are the way forward for the world, and warned about the impact to the global economy.

Commerce and Consumer Affairs Minister Andrew Bayly has resigned his ministerial positions after what he says was an "animated discussion" that ended with him putting a hand on a staffer. Bayly says he took the discussion "too far", and described his behaviour as "overbearing" and "inappropriate". "I am deeply sorry," he said in a statement. "I have been impatient to drive change in my ministerial portfolios. Last week I had an animated discussion with a staff member about work.
