It will sound like a rumble of thunder. Blasting is set to resume near Old Ellicott City next week as Howard County crews start digging a massive tunnel to redirect flood waters away from the historic mill town’s Main Street. After some test blasting in December and January, daily blasting was supposed to begin in March, according to the Howard County Department of Public Works.

When Howard County set up its Police Accountability Board, community advocates hoped the body would take on thorny issues about how the county police interact with Black people. The board was established in 2022, around the time a statewide mandate went into effect as part of criminal justice reforms that Maryland lawmakers passed in response to the killing of George Floyd by Minneapolis police.

The 27-year-old Elkridge man has supported liberal causes with protest tactics that have disrupted news conferences, irked elected leaders and led to brushes with the law. In 2019, he pleaded guilty to illegal wiretapping after livestreaming a meeting at Maryland Rep. Andy Harris’s office. In 2023, a GOP lawmaker from Louisiana defended grabbing and pushing Burdett at an event on Capitol Hill.

But the contract end dates for this crew meant littleafter the cargo ship lost power and plowed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge in the early morning of March 26, 2024. With investigations into the crash underway, some Dali crew members told loved ones they would need to remain in Baltimore a few more weeks, then a few more months.
