On a quiet stretch of wooded road near Elin Pelin, Bulgaria, Stilyana Gerova’s car broke down. Gerova pulled over to change her tire, not knowing her vehicle trouble would soon save a little life. On the side of the road, Gerova spotted a frail puppy running around with something brown looped around his neck. The pup had been looking for food in the garbage and had gotten tangled in a KFC takeout bag. “I found him near the road where there is a train station in the forest,” Gerova told The Dodo.

When the Ann Arbor Police Department (AAPD) opened the dumpster lid at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, they knew they'd find more than just trash. But it was still disappointing to see a sweet dog looking up at them with trepidation in his eyes. The 10-year-old black and white pit bull mix should’ve been sleeping in a dog bed, not crouching in the dark of a sealed dumpster. But when Corporal Perry arrived at her destination, she didn't expect to see this. “I was expecting a big, scary dog based [on] what the caller indicated,” Corporal Perry told The Dodo.

If you stroll through the kennels at Ventura County Animal Services, it’s hard to miss Scooby Doo. The brown pup with a black muzzle stands head and shoulders above the other shelter dogs — and on his hind legs, he’s taller than most of the shelter staff, too. Scooby Doo arrived at the shelter a week ago after being picked up as a stray on the streets of Camarillo, California. The family who took him in searched for his owner without luck.
