Disability pensioner Toni Ottens and her husband Rodney have made thousands of home cooked meals for people in need over the years. But Ms Ottens said she had noticed a lot more families were running out of food. "There's a lot of times I will go to places and the shelves are just empty — there's nothing there," she said. The Adelaide woman said she had also recently struggled to cook the same amount of food for others as she had in the past.

Thousands of pregnant women in Australia are going hungry with half of those too scared to ask for help, according to new research. The survey of more than 1,500 women found more than one in 10 expecting mothers had gone hungry while two in five were worrying about food, changing the quality of their diet and eating less. Every single pregnant participant failed to meet all five pregnancy-specific nutritional guidelines.
