It was the 1948 Academy Award-Winning Best Picture that inspired 16-year-old Mila Holtzeker Gamili to create “When Words Leave Cracks” which won first place in the high school division of the third annual Shine A Light on Antisemitism competition last month. Gamili felt very affected by “Gentleman’s Agreement” starring Gregory Peck, a fictional story about journalist Phil Green who investigates post-WWII antisemitism by going undercover as a Jew in a city where no one knows him.

Yom HaShoah is a day of remembrance when Jews and non-Jews around the world remember all victims of the Holocaust. In observing this solemn holiday, the Tampa Jewish Community Centers & Federation held a joint program to recognize its Shine A Light on Antisemitism student visual arts and playwrights competition (see front page article on Shine A Light), while also commemorating the six million who perished during the Holocaust.
