The FAO’s State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture report 2024 revealed a historic milestone - that global aquaculture production surpassed capture fisheries as the main producer of aquatic animals - but the year’s story regarding investments into aquaculture innovation was less positive. Indeed, in 2024 aquaculture startups raised $619 million in capital from venture funds, a figure that was 28 percent* below the previous year’s $854 million.

The aquafeed market is short of protein-rich ingredients. Expected to increase by over the next decade, to reach by 2032, global aquaculture expansion needs to be underpinned by innovations in nutrition and the development of protein-rich ingredients, according to FAO’s 2022 State of World Fisheries & Aquaculture report. This will require the sourcing of additional raw materials that are currently unavailable or otherwise used. In parallel, we have a global waste problem.

As of January 2023, there were beef cows and milk cows in the United States. Each year, a single cow belches between of methane gas, a greenhouse gas 28 times more potent than carbon dioxide. Cows and other ruminants account for 4 percent of all greenhouse gasses produced in the US. By meeting the meat demand of a growing human population, we are effectively warming the planet, one burp at a time. However, it does not have to be this way.

What inspired you to create Finless Foods? Our generation spends so much of our focus on energy but not enough on agriculture. From a very young age, I understood that agriculture is undervalued and overlooked. This led me to obtain a degree in biochemistry and molecular biology and from there I recognised that animal agriculture has an outsized negative effect on the environment. Naturally the question followed - what can we do to change that?
