    The Des Peres Board of Aldermen has approved a contract with Horner and Shifrin for $58,700 to perform surveying and design work for sediment removal on three bridges along Sugar Creek. Funding for the project will come from the Sugar Creek Operations, Maintenance and Capital Improvements (OCMI) Taxing District. The three bridges are the Old Dougherty Ferry Bridge, Highland Avenue Bridge and Des Peres Road Bridge.

    The Des Peres Board of Aldermen honored Public Safety Officer Ernest Brockman Jr. on his retirement at its most recent meeting. Brockman worked for the city for 25 years and was the school liaison officer at St. Paul’s Lutheran and St. Clement schools. In that role, he was the “first point of contact” for principals and staff, and was at the schools for drop off in the morning and pick up in the afternoon. He also taught classes on public safety-related topics.

    The popular annual fall festival will be returning to Des Peres Park after many requests from residents. The onset of COVID-19 five years ago caused the city to cancel the annual event, and while the Des Peres Parks and Recreation Department has sponsored a “Pumpkin Glow” each year since, the festival did not return.

    Two young men from Kirkwood are competing at the national and international levels of weightlifting, with both young men — George Upmeyer and Henry Ludbrook — having been involved in the sport from an early age. George Upmeyer Upmeyer, a 2023 graduate of Kirkwood High School, was in fourth grade at North Glendale Elementary School and doing CrossFit when his mom signed him up for a weightlifting class. “I went every week after that, and it just snowballed from there,” he said.

    Root 66, 12095 Manchester Road in Des Peres, will be permitted to stay open until 10 p.m. and deliver products until midnight. While the business had requested to stay open until midnight, the city’s planning and zoning commission recommended a 10 p.m. closing time. City Planner Kate Crimmins noted that one commissioner suggested that if Root 66 operates until 10 p.m. without incident, an extension to midnight might be justified.
