I'm well used to falling in love with cities and countries on my travels, and returning is always such a joy. You wonder if you'll enjoy it just as much or has it - or you - changed in the interim? My last visit to Dubrovnik was around 2007 and I absolutely adored it. The people, the history, the setting - it was all incredible and I've been keen to return ever since.

Oerlooking the world's largest underground lake, we're surrounded by a series of mysterious caverns that reflect the light from above in an enthralling play of colourful shadows across the walls. I'm sitting in a glorified basket, careening down highly glossed roads, trying to enjoy the stunning scenery I'm surrounded by but laughing too hard to fully appreciate it. To be fair, the scenery can wait - there are few places on the island of Madeira that don't offer incredible views. Two men - known as carreiros do Monte - are on the back of the wicker sledge, using their thick, rubber-soled shoes to control the speed and direction of our journey.

The last time Matt Rife was in Dublin to perform, he sold just one ticket and the gig was cancelled. Five years on, this week he filled the 3Arena with both people and laughter. The rescheduled show was moved from 3Olympia to the bigger arena after he couldn’t get out of the US due to Hurricane Helene in September, with promoters obviously aware that Rife could sell more seats.
