Carbon Robotics (Seattle, WA, USA) recently launched a kit to turn standard tractors into autonomous machines monitored remotely. Although the tractors traverse fields without a human onboard, trained personnel at a remote operations center monitor the tractors while they are operating and handle human interventions as needed. For example, a tractor might stop suddenly if an unexpected obstruction is in its path, such as a coyote or an irrigation pipe.

Exaktera LLC (Boston, MA, USA) has acquired autoVimation GmbH (Rheinstetten, Germany), a manufacturer of enclosures and mounting solutions for machine vision components. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed. The transaction follows Exaktera’s acquisition last year of iiM GmbH (Suhl, Germany), a developer of LEDs for machine vision applications.

Controlled environment agriculture (CEA)—in which plants are grown indoors under ideal conditions and often in a soilless growing medium—provides a way to harvest vegetables year-round, potentially increasing the volume of food available for an expanding worldwide population.
