Each Wednesday of this Military Appreciation Month, WXII 12 has been highlighting the men and women of our U.S. Armed Forces, who signed the dotted line to protect our rights and our freedoms. Marine Corps veteran Lewis Pleasants served four years of active duty during the Vietnam War and two years in reserve and received an honorable discharge. He remains extremely active in the Marine Corps League.

May is National Stroke Awareness Month — a time to really educate people on the importance of recognizing the risk factors and symptoms of a stroke. One local man is also proof that, while rare, a stroke can happen at any age. Nathaniel Wetli was just 35 years old when he had a stroke in the middle of the workday. Two years later, he continues on his road to recovery.

Marine Corps veteran Jacob Levy was just 21 years old when he paid the ultimate sacrifice, taking a bullet for our freedom. Levy was killed while serving our country when he was shot in the head in Afghanistan in December 2011. He would have been 35 years old this year. "He was my firstborn," said Levy's mother, Amanda Ballard. "He was born on Sept. 5, 1990. He was very energetic; he kept to himself. He grew up to be not only a great son, but a great big brother."Levy is an American hero.

Herman Schroeder is a Vietnam Marine Corps Veteran who served for nearly 30 years and retired as a master sergeant.
