I’ll admit that I had little precedent for what I could expect from BodyVox’s performance at the Patricia Reser Center for the Arts over the weekend of April 19-21. As a transplant going on eight years in Oregon, with just four of those spent in Portland proper, certain institutions had eluded me until only recently.

After a particularly harsh week of winter, audiences had settled quietly into their seats for Vespers, the highly anticipated collaboration between the contemporary dance company push/FOLD and the Portland Symphonic Choir. The world premiere, presented January 19-21 at the Patricia Reser Center for the Arts, featured push/FOLD’s five dancers together with a hundred PSC vocalists performing composer Sergei Rachmaninoff’s “All-Night Vigil,” an a cappella choral composition.

The audience may have started quiet at Portland State University’s Lincoln Hall during Thursday’s opening performance of Ephrat Asherie Dance’s Odeon, White Bird’s first presentation in its 2023-2024 , but they definitely didn’t end the night that way. Odeon, the second collaboration between Asherie, the New York City b-girl and choreographer, and her brother Ehud, a jazz musician, fuses African and Latine street dance and sounds in a rousing synchronous performance of dancers and musicians.
