I learnt to surf in North Sea storms — when I changed out of my wetsuit in the beach car park the air could be so cold that I would cry as it hit my skin. Sometimes there was snow on the sand and some late afternoons the steel water would merge with the sky at the horizon so it was a struggle to see the wave rolling towards you. I loved it.
