Music has a strange way of revealing the colour and shape of society. This was not a rock show, hip hop, pop or metal show. This was country, alt country, bluegrass and soul. The attractive bill sees cowboy boots (brand, new white ones. . . in the mud), coastal bohemians, crusties, death metal t-shirts and blue collared suburbanites in a designer wardrobe. It's a beautiful thing to witness the flowing tide like this roll over the Mount Cotton hills.

An open air venue and the threat of rain never fails to bring nervous tension to a gathering crowd. Grey clusters gather over the Brisbane CBD as quick as the merch tent line. Eyes scan the horizon, as if in a stare down of the weather gods. Another force of nature has arrived and it’s written on in 10 metre high letters on the back of stage – IDLES. The Bristol lads have brought their Love is the Fing tour to town, inducing angst, anarchy and anticipation among their ever expanding fandom.

Where to start? So much to say, so few superlatives. Starting the year with A+ level artists is a treat, let alone being able to witness The Roots and Talib Kweli together – both hip-hop royalty in their own right. After a sudden afternoon downpour clears the Brisbane humidity, fans slowly fill the venue.

Monday night isn’t the usual night for a lively band to pull an equally lively crowd. But the first show of The Gaslight Anthem’s quick three night, three-city hop, quickly dispels the myth. Maybe a result of the supersize rain cells that lashed Brisbane across the weekend prior, people were amped to get out of the house and make Monday their Saturday. Brisbane local, Emmy Hour, takes the stage and begins a winding set.

While waiting for the doors to open, a genuinely curious stranger in their mid-20s approached to ask me if the line-up to the venue was for a church. He'd inquired along the line and heard 'church' each time. He was so impressed that a Friday night was this popular for a religion. As the confusion cleared after evidence was provided via a popular streaming app, he set off on his merry way. If only he knew this crowd were about to experience a night of purity, praise and deliverance.
