It’s Halloween 2006, and I’m standing in the middle of the Val Air Ballroom in Des Moines, Iowa. My bangs are side-swept and greasy, and I’m holding a newly purchased T-shirt that reads “FIGHT OFF YOUR DEMONS.” I’ve gone into the bathroom to check if my raccoon-style eyeliner looks intentionally smudged or just messy (the latter), but despite that, I’m feeling smug. No one in this historic venue knows this band like I do. Of this, I am sure—even to this day.

Gabriel Marfisi, a 41-year-old fashion designer in Corsica, spends his free time the way a lot of people do: rewatching The Sopranos. He’s not turning on HBO’s mafioso masterpiece simply to follow along with Tony and his crew’s underhanded misadventures, however. Instead, he’s poring over the tape to learn as much as he can about the clothes they’re all wearing.

Keith Meister, in the operating room of his private practice, draws a six-centimetre line on the elbow of a baseball pitcher. He slices the elbow open and stares into a mix of ligaments, tendons, and bone—any of which could be severely injured or disfigured. He pulls the player’s skin taut with a two-pronged retractor, then pulls out a modified arthroscopy camera and begins documenting the damage.
