At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and of His Church.

The number one prayer request that Relevant Radio receives is for the conversion of family members and loved ones who have left the Church, aren’t practicing their faith, or are living a sinful lifestyle. On this third day of the National Novena to Our Lady of Champion, we pray for the conversion of sinners. We pray today for hardened sinners, who are far from God and have distanced themselves from his mercy. We pray also, and especially, for ourselves.

This July 4th, Independence Day, we celebrate the adoption of the Declaration of Independence 248 years ago! We are blessed by many freedoms and privileges in the United States of America, and we give thanks for the opportunity to work for liberty and justice for all of God’s children. Many people have sacrificed much—even their lives—to secure the freedoms we enjoy today. Enjoying freedom, however, does not mean that we do whatever we please at the expense of others.

Why do you go to Mass? Maybe I’m the first person to ask you that question. Have you ever really thought about it? If you go to Mass every Sunday, every Holy Day of Obligation, and maybe even at other times during the week, why? Why is it a priority in your life? Why not sleep in on Sunday morning, as many others do? Some people might answer: to learn about Jesus. Or, to be spiritually enriched. Or, to become inspired in my faith. Maybe your answer is similar to this. But is that enough?

Years ago when I was a college student, our priest chaplain for campus ministry used to joke that he was going to pray a Saint Joseph prayer. It was his way of saying he wanted a nap. The foster father of Jesus doesn’t appear all that often in scripture. He is there during Mary’s miraculous pregnancy and the birth of Christ, then appears again when Jesus is lost during the Holy Family’s pilgrimage to Jerusalem. But after that, he is gone. Before Jesus began his public ministry, Joseph had died.
