During the 2020 part of the COVID pandemic, I spent a lot of time what-ifing. What if this is the end of the human race? What if the world is completely different when all is said and done? What if we have a complete societal collapse? It didn’t’ help that I had just finished reading a dystopian novel that takes place in current day and speculates what would happen if the world went into a pandemic through an invisible, air-born plague.

Ling Ma I hadn’t returned the keys because the landlord hadn’t returned my security deposit. That’s how I remember it, though it’d been a long time since I’d moved out. I came across the keys again when I was rifling through a desk drawer one day, looking for something, batteries maybe. There were three in the set—one for the building entrance, another for the mailbox, and the last for the apartment unit itself. I would not have recognized the keys if not for the daisy keychain.

In the first story, “Los Angeles,” a woman lives with her husband, her kids, and her 100 ex-boyfriends. They float around her property and her thoughts like ghosts. The woman’s description of her young children is our first glimpse of the tactful lyricism Ma deploys throughout the book:“At night, they crawl into my lap, full of easily disclosed secrets, light as folding chairs.”It’s a lovely sentence that captures the elegance and logic of all eight stories.
