    No home is fireproof, but Steven and Nancy Girmant’s home in the hills of Topanga Canyon is close. “We just want everyone to know that you, as a homeowner, can do this,” Steven told KTLA News. “We didn’t do this overnight; this is over the course of 10 years.”The Girmants are part of what’s known as a “Firewise” community, meaning they and enough of their Topanga neighbors have taken steps to harden their homes and landscaping to reduce the risk of wildfires.

    To the Editor:I have a wonderful story of Election Day to share. My son and I were working on one side of the street in front of the Union Auditorium and there was an opposing group set up on the other side of the street. I knew we were going to be there all day, so I had packed snacks and drinks for us. The people on the other side of the street had drinks, but nothing to eat. I walked over and offered to share our food with them.

    LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- The judge overseeing actress Leah Remini's lawsuit against Scientology told everyone to take a "chill pill" as tensions rose during a hearing Tuesday on Scientology's first attempt at trying to get portions of her lawsuit thrown out. Remini has accused the Church of Scientology and its leader David Miscavige of undertaking a "campaign to ruin and destroy her livelihood" after she publicly departed Scientology in 2013.
