With the world forever changing at a fairly rapid pace for better or for worse, so is the Heavy Metal scene. On the better side, many bands are coming back from a temporary grave to reunite for some great shows. On the top of the radar this week, is Canadian thrash warriors 3 Inches Of Blood, who recently made their return to California for 2 special shows after a 12 year hiatus. As a fan of them before their comeback, this 2 show mini tour reunion was a special treat.

The question of how many bands make for the perfect heavy metal event or tour is highly debatable these days for multiple reasons. The current tour, Devastation On The Nation, made its way to Los Angeles, CA, at the Belasco on Tuesday evening, November 26th, and featured six death metal, black metal, or extreme metal bands. Headliners I Am Morbid ended the show at 11:30 pm while openers Knoll started the event at 6 pm.

With over four decades behind her, Doro Pesch remains as inspired, active, and energized as ever before. A force of nature, just in the past few years, the Metal Goddess released the Triumph And Agony Live in 2021 ( a live album celebrating the 35th anniversary of the classic Warlock album), the blistering new studio album Conqueress – Forever Strong and Proud in 2023, and just recently in September put out cool CD box set surrounding the 2007 EP Anthems For The Champion.

Old-school thrash is still alive and kicking these days, and aside from the big four bands we all know and love, there are a few others that bring their own flavor into the mix. On Saturday, October 26th, 2024, the Klash Of The Titans tour made its way to Los Angeles, CA, at the Hollywood Palladium. Co-headliners Testament and Kreator brought this show to life, but the support of Possessed really set the venue on fire with their darkened souls rooted in death and thrash.

So many factors can attribute to the success of a live heavy metal show, and over the years one of the best of the big four thrashers, Megadeth, has gained much momentous stage success throughout the multiple lineup changes. On Friday, August 9th, and Thursday, August 15th, 2024, Megadeth headlined Los Angeles’ YouTube Theater with support by Mudvayne and All That Remains.

If the history of death metal seems boring to some, there is no denying that the history of one of the first US bands of that genre, Death, can light up a fire in the eyes of those who love the genre and understand the journey. Fast forward to 2024 and Death To All, which is a very special tribute to the original Florida based Death band, is selling out back to back shows from their latest tour in Los Angeles. Cryptopsy supported them, and their Canadian friend’s Aggression was the opener.

A time before an onslaught of remakes, sanitized digital effects, and storylines that were not overly psychological, yes, at one point Horror was actually fun. It has been almost 70 years since Johnny Cash wrote and recorded “I Walk the Line ” in 1956. Nicknamed the Man in Black, he would come into the Country music scene after signing with Sun Records in 1954 (same year as Elvis Presley)’ though not releasing a song until 1955 with “Folsom Prison Blues.” Interestingly enough, while “I Walk the Line” became his first hit (staying there for over 43 weeks), “Folsom Prison Blues,” which was not nearly as popular, solidified Cash as anything but ordinary.

Those into the older silent Horror films, such as the 1922 classic Nosferatu, have been lucky enough to see some modern adaptations of this style emerging in the last few years. A great example would be 2018’s A Quiet Place; the first of three in a film series which brings back the artistry of acting with primarily facial expressions.

As difficult as it might be to believe that 1989 was 35 years ago, it was also a great time for east coast Death Metal. Bands such as Death, Cannibal Corpse, and Morbid Angel were thriving at this time, and then there was Florida Death Metal masters Deicide who were just getting started. Originally formed in 1987, the band started to gain popularity with 1992’s Legion, quickly becoming a constant on the Death Metal scene, on their way to becoming an influential Heavy Metal band for years to come.
