I have not seriously dived into the topic of software bill of materials (SBOMs) in this monthly column for several reasons. First, there are numerous SBOM discussions and presentations across the internet. Second, since this is a highly technical topic, it requires more space and graphics than this column permits.

In a somewhat unexpected move with positive implications for the medtech industry, the Federal Reserve (Fed) in September opted for a 0.5% interest rate cut. This major policy action was somewhat exciting because it was a more aggressive reduction than the anticipated standard 0.25% adjustment. In the short term, it had a positive impact on the stock market but other factors will determine the longer-term consequences.

Atrial fibrillation (AFib) is an irregular, often very rapid heart rhythm. During AFib, the heart’s atria beat out of sync with its ventricles. Because not enough blood is pumped out of the atria, blood pools in the area, which can clot. The condition increases the risk of stroke, heart failure, and other cardiac complications. For many, AFib has no symptoms. But for some, it can cause a fast, pounding heartbeat, shortness of breath, or light-headedness.

Synthetic sutures date back to ancient Egypt, when surgeons used plant fibers, hair, tendons, and wool to close patients’ wounds.1 The first synthetic absorbable suture was made from polyvinyl alcohol in 1931.2 There were several other suture-related milestones in the following decades, but the segment took a giant leap forward when U.S. regulators approved an absorbable stent for coronary artery disease in 2016.
