It was a sweet irony that played out on a Portuguese beach nearly eight years ago with a mother and son down on their knees, hands in the sand. Three decades earlier, they could have been sculpting sand castles and moats on an American beach during a family vacation. This time, golf course architect mom Cynthia Dye McGarey and her adult son, Matt McGarey, were having a serious granular discussion against the backdrop of a pounding sea in Portugal.

It’s been many miles and years since Diana DeLucia picked and packed boxes of tomatoes on her father’s farm in Queensland, Australia, at 4 a.m. before heading off to school. She didn’t even like the smell of tomatoes. But it would stand to reason that a young girl who grew up eating food grown right out the back door would take her wandering taste buds far away to the United States – home to the Statue of Liberty, which she imitated in costume as a child every chance she got at family functions.

Most golfers can be effective for 13 holes, but it’s those last five holes on the course that strength and conditioning coach Erin Carson wants her students to truly consider. “Not only do you need to be aerobically fit to play those last five holes, but you also must avoid getting mentally fatigued, losing your posture or becoming super tired,” she said.

The PGA Women’s Golf Clinics have attracted more than 48,000 participants and will offer 12 events this year in nine American markets. It’s a hot ticket for corporate women at such companies as Fidelity Investments, a partner in the Women’s Golf Clinics for 25 of its 33 years. Corporate partners of the clinics receive participant allocations that are then awarded to women clients and professional staff for a day of golf instruction and networking.
