The newly Mrs Frida Parker of Mountain View Road ironed everything, including underwear. While she pressed crisp handkerchiefs with delicate silk pinstripes into halves and then quarters, her husband, Tom, smoked Benson & Hedges in front of the TV. Her bridesmaids wore yellow the day rings were exchanged. Tom wore a dark moustache neatly combed. An attempt to appear older. He was only 19. At 21, Frida had begun to wonder if she would remain on the shelf forever.

“The word gender has certain problems for the feminist critic,” wrote Janice Raymond in 1979, in her prescient book The Transsexual Empire. Ruth Bader Ginsburg had used gender as a synonym for sex, so as not to bombard the all-male panel of Supreme Court judges with it when she argued about sex-based discrimination before them. But feminists had used gender to encapsulate a set societally-based beliefs about who men and women were supposed to be, and how they were supposed to behave, based on sex.

Five-and-a-half years ago, I was looking for someone to do a training on gender at my kids’ elementary school. It felt sometimes like we were living in the 1950s, with parents hewing so closely to gender stereotypes, so afraid to let their boys wear pink or their daughters cut their hair short. I was hoping to give them a dose of the 1970s, a Free to Be You and Me vaccination.

If you see this horrific man/dog abuser in #Chicago please call 911 immediately. @HumaneSociety @AntiCruelty @PAWSChicago

All I want for Christmas is for someone to call 911 with Jose Cartagena’s location. It has been 3 weeks since he skipped court for beating Zeus and a $10K warrant was issued for his arrest. Chrysler Town & Country, IN plate XPI511. Frequently seen in Chicago. https://t.co/qmOE7pOn7a

11:15 am #Chicago. Can’t even walk your dog safely. F.U. @SAKimFoxx. F.U. @chicagosmayor. F.U. @JBPritzker. This is your fault for doing nothing to prevent crime. Your politics and incompetence instead breed crime.

Shocking video shows a woman being robbed at gunpoint while walking her dog in Lincoln Park today. Seconds later, the robbery crew changed cars at same street corner where Dakotah Earley was shot and nearly killed in May. Footage posted. #Chicago https://t.co/Ruy5jjerqL

Dog abuser skipped court. If you see him@or his car, please call @Chicago_Police. #animals #chicago #dogsoftwitter
