Health Minister for Urgent Care Karin Smyth met staff at Newham Hospital’s A&E department to see how they are preparing for an expected increase in patients this coming winter. The minister was joined on Thursday by local MPs Uma Kumaran and James Asser as they toured the hospital’s urgent and emergency care facilities. Newham recently increased capacity in its Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) centre by almost 60 per cent, meaning more patients can be discharged the same day.

Nurses and Allied Health Professionals are supercharging the role of clinical research at Newham hospital in a bid to transform health and care delivery for patients and staff. Having overseen a four-fold expansion in the number of new studies, the hospital is planning to double the number of patients recruited into clinical trials this year.

A collaboration between two Barts Health hospitals has slashed waiting times and improved access for patients needing vital heart scans. Thanks to teams from Newham and St Bartholomew’s hospitals, patients being cared for at Newham now have access to specialised cardiac tomography (CT) imaging, without having to travel into the heart of London. In the past, outpatients referred by their cardiologist could expect to wait at least eight weeks for a scan.

The Royal London Hospital will once again feature in Channel 4’s series Emergency which looks at the work of the London’s Major Trauma Network. Made up of four major trauma centres across London (at The Royal London, King’s College, St George’s and St Mary’s hospitals), trauma units, ambulance and air ambulance services, the system works together to provide highly specialised care to critically injured patients.

Last week I had the pleasure of showcasing our progress and highlights over the past year at the Barts Health annual general meeting. Here's a roundup of what we covered, and the slides in case you missed it. In 2023 6,000 people came through the doors of a Barts Health hospital each day, and we saw a total of over 560,000 patients in A&E – that’s more than any other trust in England. Against this challenging backdrop, we achieved incredible successes as a group of hospitals.
