Gossipy elderly townsfolk. A police-involved investigative side plot. A somber detective who secretly pines for the main character. Netflix’s A Virtuous Business has all the fixings of a bingeable Korean drama. As I watch the show, initially drawn in by the premise of women finding sexual freedom in their conservative, rural town, I feel more touched by how they take care of each other amid a lack of basic care in a working class town.

A recently-opened art installation at Los Angeles’ Central Library invites visitors to confront the human ingenuity stemming from the austere life inside California’s prison system. It’s the first time the exhibit, Prisoners’ Inventions, has been shown in Los Angeles. The work of Half Letter Press’ Marc Fischer and Brett Bloom, Prisoners’ Inventions will be available for visitors of the LAPL Central Library to see through May 11, 2025.
