Roughly 200 volunteers from dozens of local businesses and organizations turned out to fight hunger at the United Way of East-Central Texas Saturday. Volunteers of all ages joyfully packaged 35,000 spaghetti dinners to supply local food banks while cheering and dancing to music inside the Palestine Junior High School cafeteria. The raw foods and supplies were purchased for $12,500 from Meals of Hope of Dayton, Ohio.

The Dogwood Jamboree returns at 7 p.m. Saturday, June 21, with a show titled “Country Music at Its Best,” in the Palestine High School Auditorium. The show includes performances by past winners of the Jamboree’s Youth Talent Search Contest, in which young performers vie for a chance to compete in the finals and earn the annual prize. Donny Dotson of Corsicana and Daniel Barlow of Palestine are two of the returning winners.

Palestine Community Theatre’s Improv Group is hosting a murder mystery dinner theater titled “Funeral For a Gangster” at 6:30 p.m., Saturday, June 21. The event is a fundraiser for the theater and includes a six-course meal served by the Queen St Grille’s culinary staff. A meet and greet begins at 6:30 p.m. in the lobby of The Redlands Hotel, where guests will meet the cast and be able to ask them questions before the show.

Rock Bottom Ranch is celebrating the opening of its new Aftercare Resource Center at 1 p.m. Thursday after years of fundraising and construction. The event includes a ribbon cutting at 2 p.m., an open house and tour of the facilities and refreshments provided by Chick-fil-A. Dozens of volunteers will package spaghetti dinners for local food banks starting at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 21, at the Palestine Junior High School Cafeteria at 233 Ben Milam Road. More than $12,000 is needed to support the food packaging event, which fights hunger and food insecurity in the community.

Elkhart Independent School District recently selected two new principals to lead its elementary and high school campuses. Brandi McEnturff replaces Jason Ives at the helm of Elkhart High School, while Shelly Nunley has been appointed to replace Kristin Steely at Elkhart Elementary School. Enrollment at both campuses is roughly 300 students each.

Palestine Independent School District has appointed Joey Mason as principal of Palestine High School for the 2025-2026 school year. Mason has led Palestine Junior High School as principal for seven years and previously served as an assistant principal, teacher and coach at the high school. PHS is the largest school campus in Anderson County, with more than 1,000 students in ninth through 12th grades. Members of Christian Women in Service at the First Methodist Church recently donated roughly $5,000 earned from November’s Feast of Goodness to local nonprofits. More than two dozen East Texas organizations received checks of $300 to $500 for various programs, from hunger relief to social services. Hope Station and Rock Bottom Ranch were both given the largest checks of $500 each. WE CARE Palestine, the Multi-Cultural Education Center and the Palestine Food Pantry each received $400.
