    Living in Southeast Texas as a teenager, I belonged to one of the few Asian families in our small town. My parents owned a Chinese buffet, where I worked every Saturday and many evenings. Pentecostal groups, their women’s uncut hair in sweeping updos, settled on the place in droves after their evening services, just as we were about to close. A man wearing a “Jesus Is My Homeboy” baseball cap always came on weekends and ate unthinkable quantities of salt-and-pepper crab.

My ­Pennsylvanian grandmother, Betty Flocken, sent me a new book every month. When Beverly Cleary’s Ellen Tebbits arrived, I read it in a single afternoon. That day inspired me to become a children’s author. When I headed to Yale at seventeen, I was already working on what would become my first published novel, The Winter Prince.

    While I was attending art school in Boston in the 1990s, an illustration class piqued my interest in children’s book publishing. At that time Boston housed several publishers, the Horn Book, and Simmons College (now University), which made it a small hub for children’s literature. In a “right place, right time” moment, I was given an entrée into the world of children’s literature as an intern at the Horn Book.
