MANILA, Philippines — Electricity charges are bound to further rise as the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has allowed the country’s grid operator to recover P28.29 billion in project costs. This was as the ERC finally completed the rate reset of the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) covering the fourth regulatory period, which fixed its maximum allowable revenue (MAR) at P335.78 billion for 2016 to 2022.

The Manila Electric Co. (Meralco), the power distributor of billionaire Manuel V. Pangilinan, has committed to invest more in energy projects after President Marcos extended its franchise for another 25 years or until 2053. Pangilinan, who serves as Meralco chair and chief executive officer, expressed gratitude to Mr. Marcos and lawmakers for backing the renewal of the firm’s current franchise, which is set to expire in 2028.

ACEN Corp. has further built up its expansion cache with 750 million Australian dollars meant to finance its renewable energy push in Australia. The listed energy arm of the Ayala group said on Tuesday the new funds would support its operating clean energy assets and bankroll the development of new ones. These include the 520-megawatt Stubbo solar project in New South Wales. A group of 11 Australian and international banks had backed the fresh round of financing, according to ACEN.

Gas-fired power plant operator Excellent Energy Resources Inc. (EERI) said it’s ready to start delivering 1,200 megawatts of power to Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) once its facility reaches full operability by the end of May. The statement came as the Department of Energy flagged delays in Eeri’s power supply to Meralco, which had been originally contracted to begin delivery by December of last year.
