In a future conflict over Taiwan, Beijing’s sixth-generation fighter could block the airspace to foreign bases in Guam for up to two hours from 1,000km away, according to a mainland Chinese military magazine. The goal involving the next-gen fighter was created in view of People’s Liberation Army weaknesses against the American B-21 stealth bomber in a conflict within the first island chain, it said. The ginkgo leaf-shaped fighter is unofficially dubbed the J-36 and is in development by the PLA.

The People’s Liberation Army has revealed details of its Type 094 nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine for the first time, during the navy’s open day. The sea-based nuclear deterrent is said to have a submerged displacement of 11,000 tonnes, according to information on display during events to mark the PLA Navy’s 76th anniversary last week. Posters on display for the open day also said the nuclear submarine had a maximum speed of 30 knots and could operate at a maximum depth of 400 metres.

China’s tightening export controls on critical minerals could hit more than three-quarters of the United States’ weapons supply chain, according to a new study. Researchers from Govini, a defence acquisition information firm, identified 80,000 weapons parts that were made using antimony, gallium, germanium, tungsten or tellurium – the global supply of which are all dominated by China – “meaning nearly 78 per cent of all [Pentagon] weapon systems are potentially affected”.
