Individuals with long-standing (1, 2) and recently diagnosed (3, 4) type 1 diabetes (T1D) have smaller pancreata than age-matched nondiabetic individuals (2, 4). Histologic studies of the pancreas of deceased donors with long-standing T1D suggest that these changes are due to loss of acinar cell number (5, 6). It is not known whether the changes in pancreas size represent an acute or ongoing process that continues in long-standing T1D.
