The need for food systems transformation (FST) is gaining recognition across the world. In July, the UN Food Systems Summit +2 Stocktaking Moment served as the first global follow-up to the 2021 UN Food Systems Summit, which was intended to accelerate FST as a driver of the global 2030 Agenda.

In 2021, the United Nations Secretary-General convened the United Nations Food Systems Summit (UNFSS) to advance progress on food systems transformation and towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As part of this process, over 100 countries submitted their collaboratively-developed national pathways for food systems transformation.

Some of the points stressed in the brief reinforce the conclusions of IISD’s work on expanded wealth measures to complement GDP in three countries—Indonesia, Ethiopia and Trinidad and Tobago. IISD is working closely with economic experts and researchers from universities in each of the three countries to develop expanded wealth measures to complement GDP. Our work reflects and reinforces the Secretary-General’s call to complement GDP in several ways.
