Compiling the most comprehensive global δ15N dataset, a new study shows the plant use of various available soil nitrogen forms (ammonium, nitrate, and organic nitrogen) is strongly controlled by temperature. BackgroundNitrogen is a crucial element for plant life. Plants are surrounded by nitrogen since nitrogen accounts for 78% of the atmosphere by volume.

CORRESPONDENCE 02 July 2024 Public trust in science in the United States, although high relative to trust in other institutions, has been declining (A. Lupia et al. Proc. Natl Acad. Sci. USA 121, e2319488121; 2024). Increasing reports of unethical behaviour, such as the recent scandal in high-temperature superconductivity (see Nature https://doi.org/mmz2; 2024), risk compounding this.
