To mark the 20th anniversary of her winning the 800m and 1,500m golds at the Athens Olympics, Dame Kelly Holmes has this year set herself 20 tasks, including trekking to Machu Picchu with her youth-development charity the Dame Kelly Holmes Trust, completing the A to Z of Parkruns and taking on the Three Peaks Challenge in St Lucia. This involves scaling Gros Piton (798m), Petit Piton (739m) and Mount Gimie (950m).

We’d been going for a couple of hours when we rounded a corner and saw the monastery. When Eskerne Falcon was living in New York, she thought she overheard some people speaking Basque. Now leading tours back in her home city of San Sebastian (and a Tripadvisor “world’s top ten food experience” guide to boot), she tells me how she turned round to greet her fellow country folk, only to realise she’d actually caught a snatch of conversation between Japanese tourists. “Basque is a unique language unlike anything else around the world,” she says proudly.
