K-12 schools spend between on educational technology applications each year. With 87% of America's teachers spending over an hour, and some more than 5 hours, using education technologies each day in the classroom, learning technologies have become a large part of both school budgets and classroom instructional time. Yet, educational applications are not always well vetted in the Google Play or Apple stores, where any app can be labeled as “educational,” even when it may not be.

Do students perform better on digital or paper assessments? Does the amount of time spent on an app correlate to learning growth? How much valid and reliable research is typically behind an educational application? These are questions that busy educators often wonder about, yet they may not have an easy way to find answers. Fortunately, there is research on education apps and devices as well as learning growth and outcomes in the research journals.

It’s easy to feel inundated with the number of educational applications out there. The sheer amount of options can be overwhelming, and teachers struggle not only to select tools but also to know how to best utilize the tools for their classroom teaching. From the hundreds of pieces of edtech research I’ve read, there are helpful guidelines that teachers can use to have a healthy teaching approach with digital tools.
