Robin McNaught has been surrounded by dogs since he was a child. As a fourth-generation sheepdog handler in Wales, the training genes run strong in him. A dog's nearly monthlong transformation to trust humans again after being surrendered proves patience is key. One-year-old Roxy was surrendered to the New York nonprofit Four Legs Good at the end of November. She had "many unpleasant experiences" with humans before being dropped off, which made her "terrified" of anyone who would try to befriend her. However, Rachel Oldenburger, a foster parent and shelter volunteer, took a chance on Roxy to show her how it feels to be loved.
