We must step up our efforts, not only championing organic food and farming, but international peace and economic justice, civil liberties, participatory democracy, and regenerating health, both mental and physical.

By Liz StewartWhen southwest Iowa was hit by devastating floods in 2019, Margaret Brady saw the destruction firsthand. Her hometown of Shenandoah and the surrounding communities suffered losses that left families and business owners with nothing. As a veterinarian, Margaret was helping flood victims with animal care and vaccinations. During that time, she had close contact with several families who were desperate to find housing but didn’t know where to look.

In an effort to help save her family’s ranch, Elle Worley traded her life in a concrete jungle for the wide, open spaces of the Nebraska Sandhills. In 2021, Elle returned to her mother’s hometown of Dunning, Nebraska, and began working at her family’s operation, WM. Zutavern Cattle Co. Last year, she wanted to grow her agricultural skills beyond her backyard garden, so she expanded her garden into a small farm. “My favorite thing about it is being outside,” said Elle.

For a number of years, I have worked with FOTAS to foster kittens. It has been a tremendously fulfilling experience. We all know that shelters are overcrowded and that certainly restricts the ability to help all the pets in need. In our community there is a wide range of reasons animals are turned in to the shelter. Sometimes they are abandoned, they may be feral, or elderly owners may need to go into an extended care facility and can’t take them.

By LIZ STEWART When Katie Jantzen left her home state of Nebraska to attend college in Virginia, she had no idea she’d return several years later to start her own farming operation on her family’s land. Her studies in environmental science led to an interest in local food and food systems. From there, Katie spent two years in Indiana working at a volunteer program through a church, trying to get local produce into food pantries and developing community gardens.

Even though Iowa’s climate only allows for a limited growing season, Tiffiny Clifton and Matt Johnson are confident they can sell locally grown food year round. Clifton and Johnson own and operate Long Walk Farm, in Council Bluffs. They started their farm in July 2020, as a diverse, sustainable and regenerative operation. The farm is transitional with the intention to be organic certified next spring. “In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, we decided to buy a farm,” Johnson said.
