Passionate about both reading and cooking, volunteer Andrea Vladimir kicked off the Cookbook Club to encourage residents to use the library in a different way. She envisioned a salon-like feel to discuss cooking “like Hemingway talking about writing.” Participants have enjoyed cheese tastings and squash making, sessions in knife skills, and a Japanese tea ceremony.

BREWSTER — It is a difficult enough task to run a successful restaurant. But Cassie and Rich Parente, owners of Clock Tower Grill in Brewster, have an additional challenge: raising livestock for their rustic eatery at their nearby home farm. Most area restaurants do not have their own livestock farm (Michelin-starred Blue Hill at Stone Barns in Westchester County is the only other one nearby).

A world-renowned sake brewery comes to Hyde Park. The popularity of Japanese culture is booming, and it’s not just sushi, anime, and J-pop music. Interest in sake is on the rise, which is why premium sake brewer Asahi Shuzo decided to open Dassai Blue Sake Brewery (its first brewery outside of Japan) in Hyde Park last September. Just a mile down the road from the Culinary Institute of America (CIA), it is the largest artisanal sake brewery in the U.S.The proximity is deliberate.
