London’s Matt Johnson has released records as The The since the early 1980s. After a 25-year hiatus, he has returned to the studio to produce his first full The The album. Ensoulment sounds as relevant as ever, cinematic, and lyrically in tune. Johnson joined me on In The Groove during my week as guest host, just as he arrived in Georgia to prepare for the United States’ leg of his current world tour.

He’s contributed his rhythmic prowess to some of the most recognized names in the jazz world, including Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Pat Metheny and Charles Lloyd. Infinite River performed at the Detroit Institute of Arts for the Concert of Colors music festival in 2023, and recently were slotted as the opening act on Sonic Youth co-founder Kim Gordon’s tour.
