A stroke rehabilitation gym is expected to open this month at Montagu Hospital in Mexborough, South Yorkshire. As part of a wider £1.4m investment in stroke services, the gym has been funded by the Fred and Ann Green Legacy, alongside support from DBTH Charity. It will feature £700,000k robotic rehabilitation devices that will serve as ‘therapy multipliers,' enabling patients to engage in highly focused, intensive therapy sessions under the guidance of expert clinicians.

The 18-month reconfiguration will see the creation of a Centre of Excellence for Rehabilitation and Ageing Well at Mount Gould Hospital. Mark Hackett, interim chief executive for UHP and Michelle Thomas, chief executive for Livewell Southwest, said: ‘The reconfiguration of the bed base on the Mount Gould Hospital site gives us an opportunity to provide specialist beds for the needs of our local population, and create a Centre of Excellence for Rehabilitation and Ageing Well.

The Royal College of Radiologists' (RCR) 2024 clinical radiology and clinical oncology workforce census reveals that the shortfalls in both workforces stands at 29% and 15%, respectively. These are each set to rise to 39% and 19% by 2029, should no action be taken. The RCR says the deficits are the product of ‘chronic under-investment in staff, which coincides with spiking demand for our expertise'.

The news followed the Government's announcement of £750m for urgent hospital repairs last month. Joe Teape, chief executive, Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust, said: ‘We've been very open that the age and condition of our estate at Torbay Hospital is having an impact on our patients, our staff and our ability to delivery high quality care. ‘While we welcome this investment to help mitigate our immediate risks, the need for significant investment in Torbay Hospital remains.

The £32m academy, which is part of Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust's commitment to develop its staff, sits on the site of the Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital in Cramlington. The facility offers courses to nurses, midwives and allied health professionals, such as physiotherapists, radiographers, podiatrists and occupational therapists. Courses range from apprenticeships to clinical skills programmes to a degree delivered in partnership with the University of Sunderland.
