The federal government has announced a range of measures for tackling online harms as they relate to misogyny and men’s violence against women. Some of these are sensible in principle, such as the ban on creating and sharing sexually explicit material without consent, using artificial intelligence. A few of the others, however, warrant some further scrutiny. In particular, age assurance regimes have been a source of significant concern for digital rights advocates.

There are once again calls for the government to Do Something about misinformation online, following the recent stabbings at Bondi Junction and the immediate spread of speculation and false claims on social media. The previously ditched misinformation bill appears to be back on the cards. Even Peter Dutton has indicated support despite loud criticism from the Coalition towards the draft legislation last year.

There has been much talk about nations’ and corporations being complicit in the war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide being committed by Israel in the wake of Hamas’ horrific attacks on October 7. Much of this discussion, and in fact action, has been taken in the context of governments approving the export of arms and other military supplies to the Israeli military. A number of countries have suspended arms transfers to Israel, including Belgium, Italy and Spain.
