EAST GRAND FORKS — The Polk-Norman-Mahnomen Community Health Board will be playing guinea pig for a new Minnesota environmental statute following a massive fine brought earlier this year against the American Crystal Sugar Company. Without precedent, the board must make it up as it goes along, according to Polk County Commissioner Joan Lee, who also chairs the health board. “We’re in uncharted territory,” Lee said.

GRAND FORKS — In Grand Forks, firearms are the preferred tool for murder, and the most recent deadly shooting — on July 4 at a downtown bar — is no exception. The Grand Forks Police Department includes shooting deaths in its count of murders, which along with other violent crimes have remained consistent over the past decade, according to GFPD Lt. Andrew Stein. “It seems like there have been large (incident) calls almost every year,” Stein said.

GRAND FORKS — Grand Forks County is experiencing an increase in new COVID-19 cases, but the number is not currently a cause for concern, according to a Grand Forks Public Health epidemiologist. Currently, nothing has indicated that this year’s COVID-19 spread is unusual or a cause for greater concern, epidemiologist Shawn McBride said. “We’re not concerned beyond what the typical concerns are,” McBride said.

GRAND FORKS — Despite an explosion of new apartment units in Grand Forks, the director of the local housing authority said housing is becoming less affordable. The Grand Forks Housing Authority provides residents of Grand Forks County with pathways to affordable housing, a need that has remained consistent in the community, according to Executive Director Terry Hanson.

GRAND FORKS – The Opal, an event space located just south of Gateway Drive on Grand Forks' north end, will relocate downtown this winter, expanding the amount of event space offered in the area. The event space is a property of 322 Hospitality Group, which also owns the Olive Ann Hotel, Cloud 9 Events and 322 Skies. According to Director of Marketing Allison Johnson, the new home for the space is an upcoming renovation project currently in the design phase.
