The following is a recap of fertilizer price trends and market developments for December. Domestic: Ammonia producers in December issued winter fill and spring prepay sales at levels significantly cheaper compared to the previous year. In the Corn Belt, offers ranged from $645 to $650 per short ton (t) free-on-board (FOB -- sales price without transportation costs included) for prepay and $620/t FOB in Iowa for fill, respectively.

NOLA urea barges were assessed at $345-$355/t FOB at the end of last month, down from $390-$410/t FOB at the start as the market drifted while waiting for direction from India during downtime in the domestic market. River terminal prices at trading hubs along the Mississippi ranged from $465-$475/t FOB last month, mostly matching our view of offers at major terminals at the end of September at $450-$475/t FOB.

River terminal offers were stable from August at $450-$475/t FOB as interior markets awaited further direction from the NOLA market in the absence of much domestic demand last month, which tended to drift during lulls between news about India's purchasing. Fertilizer barge loading drafts were reduced anywhere from 15%-28% for dry bulk along the Mississippi River due to the low waters, according to American Commercial Barge Line, with tow sizes also reduced.

Offers at Mississippi River terminal hubs reached $450-$475/t FOB at the end of the month, rising higher alongside NOLA barge values to a range of $440-$475/t FOB in July. U.S. urea imports looked on track to match July and August 2022 levels at the end of the month, and with a relatively even trade balance expected to continue, urea prices were expected to continue following trends in the global market.

Following a more bearish sentiment in the global market emerging as India's urea demand is increasingly fed by China, U.S. urea prices were expected to remain under pressure in the U.S. Gulf.

Summer in the fertilizer industry is typically a waiting game for buyers who eagerly await potential discounts from suppliers on ammonia, UAN, potash and phosphates. The ammonia market in June waited no longer, as summer-fill offers were announced in mid-June from Koch and CF at levels approximately $500 per short ton (t) below last year's programs, and more than $100/t below ammonia offers in early June.
