Under 4 hours is an easy "day drive" commitment. Think about it, you leave by 6 AM. Spend 9 AM - 3 PM doing whatever the activity is...then you are home by 6 PM. Being in New England means you are always about a 3 hour drive (or less) to any major ski mountain. The only bad thing is that is only available from January - March... Until now. There is an indoor ski mountain for year-round skiing and snowboarding just 3 hours from Boston, Massachusetts...and it is the only one in North America.
